Organize Media with Folders

Use folders to keep your WordPress media library organized and easy to navigate

WordPress does not have built-in folder support for the media library. RightPlace integrates with folder plugins to let you create folders, assign files, and drag media between folders directly from the desktop app.

Before you start

  • A WordPress site connected and fully paired
  • At least one folder plugin active on your site:
    • RightPlace client plugin (installed during pairing, includes folder support)
    • HappyFiles (third-party folder plugin)

Both plugins can be active at the same time. They appear as separate root nodes in the folder tree.

Step 1: Open the Media tab

Click on your WordPress resource, then select the Media tab. You will see your media library in grid or list view.

Step 2: Open the folder tree

The folder tree sidebar appears on the left side of the Media view. It shows your folder hierarchy grouped by provider:

  • HappyFiles folders (if the HappyFiles plugin is active)
  • RightPlace folders (from the RightPlace client plugin)

Each provider has its own root node. Folders can be nested within each provider.

Step 3: Create folders

Right-click on a root node or any existing folder in the tree and select New Folder. Enter a name and press Enter. The folder is created on your WordPress site as a taxonomy term.

Suggested folder names by content type:

  • Blog Headers
  • Product Photos
  • Team Avatars
  • Downloads

To create subfolders, right-click an existing folder and select New Folder. The subfolder appears nested under its parent.

Step 4: Assign files to folders

There are three ways to put files into folders:

Add to Folder dialog

  1. Select one or more files in the media grid
  2. Right-click and select Add to Folder…
  3. A modal appears with checkboxes for all available folders (both HappyFiles and RightPlace)
  4. Check the folders you want to assign the file to
  5. Files can belong to multiple folders at the same time

Drag and drop

Select files in the grid and drag them onto a folder in the tree sidebar. The files are assigned to that folder.

Upload to a folder

Select a folder in the tree first, then upload new files. Uploaded files are automatically assigned to the active folder.

Step 5: Browse by folder

Click any folder in the tree to show only the files assigned to that folder. The breadcrumb trail above the grid updates to show the current path.

Click the root node to see all media again.

Multi-pane drag and drop

Right-click a tab and select Split Right or Split Down to open a second pane. This lets you:

  • Organize across folders: Show different folders in each pane and drag files between them
  • Copy between sites: Open Media tabs from two different WordPress sites side by side and drag files from one to the other

Selected files are highlighted during drag, with a badge showing the count being moved.

Image Editor

Right-click any image and select Open in Image Editor, or double-click to open it. The editor opens in a new tab with:

  • Left toolbar: Rotate, Flip, Crop (with presets like 1:1, 4:3, 16:9), Resize (with scale presets), Adjustments (highlights, shadows, saturation, temperature), Curves, Draw, Shapes, Text, Watermark, Pen, Filters
  • Right panel: File info (format, size, zoom), Layers (blend mode, opacity)
  • Auto-save: Changes are saved automatically, with a status indicator showing Saved or Modified

Detail panel

Click any file in the grid to open the detail panel on the right, which shows:

  • File preview
  • Filename and URL (with copy button)
  • Type, size, dimensions, and modified date
  • Folder assignments (listed by provider)
  • Quick actions: Copy URL, Open in Browser, Edit in Image Editor

Tips

  • Multiple folders: Unlike physical folders, a file can be in several folders at once. Use this to categorize files by both content type and project (e.g. a photo can be in both Product Photos and Summer Campaign).
  • Two providers: HappyFiles folders are visible in wp-admin too. RightPlace folders are managed through the RightPlace plugin. You can use both simultaneously.
  • Search: Use the search bar to find files by name within the current folder.
  • Context menu: Right-click files for quick actions: Copy URL, Open in Image Editor, Copy, Cut, Delete, and Add to Folder.
